Four Lions are roaring back into action as 2020 draws to a merciful close, wrapping up the year with a big hometown gig at Bendigo's @handlebarbendigo on Saturday, December 5. It is the much-loved local roots rockers' second live hometown show since February, before the entertainment world was forced into an eight-month coronavirus lockdown. It also delayed the recording of the band's forthcoming fifth album, which will now be completed and released next year. "It has been a frustrating period for everyone," admits frontman @shannlions , who has been a regular performer in the online livestreaming space in the interim. "We are really looking forward to getting back into the studio (Melbourne's @headgap ) to finish our record, after being forced to reschedule the sessions several times in the past six months. "And we can't wait to get back on stage and play for an audience again, after spending too long looking down the barrel of a camera in an empty room for the livestreaming events." Four Lions will be supported by Bendigo singer-songwriter @mariahmccarthymusic . Doors open at 7pm. Entry is free, but numbers will be strictly limited in line with the current restrictions. No bookings - first come first served - this show will fill up fast! #bendigo #livemusic #classicrock #americana #music #handlebar #melbourne #castlemaine #goldfields #rock See less
Central Victorian roots rockers Four Lions are kicking off 2020 with a handful of Victorian shows, before heading back into the studio to record album No.5.
Hot on the heels of a successful 12 months where the band released its fourth album, the acclaimed Hard Days, Four Lions will return to Pistol Pete's Food n Blues on Saturday, February 8.
The band plies its trade in a potent blend of roots, rock, and alt-country that channels the spirit of their musical heroes, including Wilco, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen.
Punters can expect to get a sneak preview of new songs from the forthcoming album on the night. “I’m excited about recording and can’t wait to get back into the studio,” declares frontman Shann Lions.
The year 2019 proved to be a big one for Four Lions, who spent most of it touring behind the Hard Days album, including embarking on their first interstate dates. It was the Herald Sun’s Album of the Week, a first for an independent, regionally-based band, with its songs garnering national airplay.
And it provided the ideal opportunity for the five-piece - consisting of lead singer/guitarist Lions, lead guitarist Keith MacQueen, keyboardist Stephen Briggs, drummer Gavan Moncrieff, and bassist Bradley Bradford – to further cement their reputation as one of their hometown’s most prolific and hardest-working bands.
Americana, alt-country, roots, folk, honky tonk, western swing ... call it what you will, but there is the unmistakable whiff of country in the air at Gold Roses.
Next year sees the unveiling of Bendigo's first alt-country music festival, so pull on your best cowboy boots and sashay on down to Handle Bar on Saturday, February 1, from 3pm.
This inaugural edition features a stellar line-up of some of the finest Victorian artists working in these genres.
You've seen them at the best country music festivals around the nation and beyond, playing everywhere from Tamworth to Nashville - from big stages to grungy dive bars and everything in between. You've heard them on Double J, RRR, PBS, ABC Country, and 94.7 The Pulse.
Now see them right here in your own backyard - and for free.

AUSTRALIAN band Four Lions started as a solo vehicle for Bendigo-based singer-songwriter Shann Lions in December 2014, after he emerged from an eight-year musical hiatus.
He was joined by future members, guitarist Keith MacQueen and bassist Greg Perry, for the 2015 debut album Charing Cross, released on the band's own label Verse Chorus Verse.
The songs, all bar one written by Lions, channel his myriad musical heroes - from Wilco to Bruce Springsteen to Tom Petty - to conjure up his own intoxicating cocktail of roots, rock, and alt-country, blended with the spirit of a kid who grew up in the Australian bush.
For 2016's follow-up Vahland, drummer/percussionist Gavan Moncrieff and keyboardist Stephen Briggs joined, completing the permanent line-up. New bassist Bradley Bradford joined in early 2019, after the amicable departure of Perry.
Four Lions cemented their position as one of central Victoria's most prolific and hardest- working bands, extensively touring in the region and releasing a swathe of singles and EPs.Their third album, 2017's Golden Triangle (released several months after the four-track EP of the same name), was written and recorded in the space of a weekend.
Four Lions released their fourth album, Hard Days, on May 1, 2019, through Verse Chorus Verse. It was recorded at Preston's Head Gap Studios by producer/engineer Finn Keane (Wilco); produced by The Greasy Triplets (Lions, MacQueen and Keane); mixed by Sam Kassirer (David Ramirez, Josh Ritter) in Boston, Massachusetts; and mastered by Ludwing Diaz in San Francisco, California.
Hard Days was Melbourne Herald Sun’s Album of the Week. Its release was followed by a successful album launch tour of regional and metropolitan Victoria, with a series of interstate dates planned for the latter half of the year.
